    Story

Like millions of people around the world, I was dismayed to discover on Wednesday 9 November that Donald J. Trump had been elected the next president of the United States. Throughout the election campaign, Trump did little to suggest he was qualified for the highest elected office in the most powerful country in the world. More than this, Trump and his surrogates consistently used dog-whistle tactics to stoke fear, hate and division. His campaign was characterised by repeated racism, xenophobia, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, and bigotry. His shameful rhetoric targeted African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Latinos and Mexicans, Muslim Americans, refugees, and women on an almost daily basis.

I decided to set up this crowdfunding campaign as a small gesture to show solidarity with and support for some of the groups that are likely to become increasingly marginalised and vulnerable in Trump's America. It is an opportunity for concerned global citizens living within and outside the United States to do something symbolic and practical to resist Trump's America. All proceeds will be divided equally between the following charities and organisations:

Center for Reproductive Rights - www.reproductiverights.org
International Refugee Assistance Project - http://www.refugeerights.org/
NAACP Legal Defense Fund - http://www.naacpldf.org/
    The Trevor Project - http://www.thetrevorproject.org/
MALDEF: The Latino Legal Voice for Civil Rights in America - http://www.maldef.org/

Many of President-elect Trump's closest supporters have consistently advocated policies to restrict women's right to control their own bodies. Trump himself has promised to fill the Supreme Court vacancy with an anti-choice justice. It is vital therefore to support organisations like the Center for Reproductive Rights: "For more than 20 years, the Center for Reproductive Rights has used the law to advance reproductive freedom as a fundamental human right that all governments are legally obligated to protect, respect, and fulfill."

During the 2016 election, Donald Trump repeatedly made xenophobic & racist attacks directed against Muslims, including vulnerable refugees from the Middle East. The International Refugee Assistance Project released a statement urging "the President-elect to keep our doors open to those in danger... we call on the new administration to continue admitting refugees from the Middle East, which currently hosts the majority of refugees and plays a key role in the fight against terrorism." Our fundraising is in solidarity with Muslim refugees.

One of the causes this campaign supports is MALDEF: The Latino Legal Voice for Civil Rights in America, which "promotes social change through advocacy, communications, community education, & litigation in the areas of education, employment, immigrant rights, & political access… strives to implement programs… structured to bring Latinos into mainstream of American political & socio-economic life; provide better educational opportunities; encourage participation in all aspects of society; & offer a positive vision for the future.” www.maldef.org

Ben,I have been in a very poor financial situation for a while, and will continue to be so, but I wanted to donate the minimum amount as a gesture of support more than a valuable contribution.

Thanks for setting up this excellent fundraiser for some crucial organisations, Ben! Things like this make me realise we are not powerless in the face of hate and bigotry.
