    Story

I am raising money for Fr John Luke who is leading the work on the Islands of Rhodes and Kos to support young children and their families who fled by boat to escape the crisis.

Steven (Fr John Luke and I ) trained together as nurses at The London Hospital - Steven is now a Franciscan priest in Rhodes. Last year you helped me raise nearly £3000 which was used to give the children and their families the little things we take for granted.

This year the situation has worsened for the refugees in Rhodes. Last week they were forcibly removed from the unofficial refugee camp, their few belongings and toys and makeshift dwellings were bulldozed and they were transported by boat to Kos. Their position there is unknown at this time and Fr Luke has not yet been given permission to visit them.

A number of refugees fled the camp and evaded capture - the issue for Fr luke is now how these homeless refugees will be supported.

You support allows Fr John Luke to buy fresh fruit, sweets, colouring books and pens and secondhand toys such as scooters for the children and much needed medication for chronic long term conditions and the infections and skin conditions which have arisen from their living conditions.

I am so proud of my friend Fr John Luke- we trained together at The London many moons ago. He has received a Knighthood from the President of Italy as recognition of his tireless work supporting the refugees & for his work to give a voice to the voiceless. Fr Luke asked me to tell you that this award recognises the support & publicity many of you have given to the plight of these refugees & thanks you for your ongoing support - you are making a difference everyday & these people know that they are not forgotten by their friends in the UK.

This is some photos from my last visit when I helped make up the food parcels each tuesday. Every week Fr Luke makes up parcels with basics such as a loaf of bread, passata, rice, pasta, tins of tuna. No one is turned away.

A message from Fr Luke “Our Franciscan mission in Rhodes to the refugees and the local poor of Rhodes continues apace. Despite the arrival of some tourists, the local economy remains low. Naturally, any work available is given to those who know the language. Sadly our refugees know only Arabic, with a smattering of English sometimes. We continue to support the refugees by paying for their accommodation when possible. you can read the full message below
