Help Us Uncover the Rhondda Tunnel — £200,000 MATCH FUNDING CHALLENGE!
🚇 Bring the Rhondda Tunnel Back Into the Light
The Rhondda Tunnel is one of South Wales’s most extraordinary treasures — a two-mile former railway tunnel buried beneath the mountains between the Rhondda and Afan valleys. Opened in 1890, closed in 1968, and hidden away for decades… it’s time to bring it back.
Our vision? To reopen it as a spectacular walking and cycling route — creating one of the longest accessible former railway tunnels in Europe and a world-class visitor destination right here in South Wales.
But right now, the historic portal at Blaencwm (pictured below in 1973), lies buried under 18,000 tonnes of earth. Most people can’t even see it. It’s just an idea — until now.
⭐ THE MATCH FUNDING OPPORTUNITY — EVERY £1 BECOMES £2!
A generous supporter has pledged £200,000 — but ONLY if we can raise the remaining £200,000 in match funding by 31 December 2026.
That means EVERY pound you donate is DOUBLED. Your £10 becomes £20. Your £50 becomes £100. Your £200 becomes £400. Every single donation counts TWICE.
This first phase will excavate and reveal the Blaencwm portal — bringing the tunnel out of hiding and proving to everyone exactly what this project can become. It’s the vital first step toward reopening the full tunnel and transforming the future of these valleys.
💡 Why It Matters
✅ Heritage saved — preserving a masterpiece of Welsh industrial history
✅ New routes & active travel — connecting communities by foot and bike
✅ Tourism & jobs — bringing visitors, spending, and new opportunities to the Rhondda and Afan valleys
✅ A lasting legacy — something our communities can be proud of, for generations to come
🕒 The Clock Is Ticking
We have until 31 December 2026 to unlock the £200,000 pledge. Every day counts.
Please donate today — whatever you can afford — and help us unlock double the impact. Together, we can uncover the portal, reveal the tunnel, and start building something truly extraordinary.
"For the first time in decades, people will stand before the tunnel entrance and see exactly what this dream can become. Be part of that moment."
