Story
"Sharks are beautiful animals and if you are lucky enough to see lots of them, that means that you are in a healthy ocean. You should be afraid if you are in the ocean and you don't see sharks." Sylvia Earle.
Currently it is estimated that 100 million sharks were killed for their fins in 2015. The fins are hacked off and the sharks are thrown back in the sea alive, to sink and suffocate.
South Africa was the first country to ban shark finning but a lot of countries still allow it.
The Dyer Island Conservation Trust is an advocate and a leading ambassador in the protection of these majestic and graceful creatures. The aim is not to remove the fear of sharks from the public, rather, nurture that fear with respect and admiration, not the idiotic fear one has which is fear of ignorance, of the unknown beneath the deep.
Great White shark numbers are not fully known but they are endangered and numbers are declining. The potential loss of this apex predator will also mean the extinction of the African Penguin as seal numbers are growing and they kill them not for their meat but for the fish in their belly. African Penguins are expected to be extinct within 15 years.
Any money that you give will go directly towards the research and protection of these amazing fish.
