Story

When severe flash floods swept through northern Nepal on 26 August 2026, they changed thousands of lives in a matter of hours. Fast-moving floodwaters surged through communities in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Tanahun Districts, washing away homes, roads and bridges and cutting off entire villages. Families are now left without reliable access to safe water, healthcare, schools and other essential services, while rescue teams continue to face challenges in reaching affected communities.

More than 84,270 people, including around 32,000 children, have been affected. As search and recovery continues, children face some of the greatest risks and need urgent support.

To raise money for Nepal through the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund, The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst will be hosting a charity Doko race.

The Doko (traditional Nepalese bamboo basket) Race was introduced in 1989. It is regarded as a rite of passage that all Gurkhas must go through to be selected for the British Army (Brigade of Gurkhas) and signals a pivotal moment during the selection procedure when individuals are tested to their limits. Aspiring Gurkhas are challenged with a gruelling course in the foothills of the Himalayas carrying a Doko, held in place with a head strap (namlo) loaded with 25kg of sand. All participants must complete the 5 km climb in 43 minutes to progress onto the next stage of selection.

2. The 2026 event will involve officer cadets from across the academy, permanent staff and their families running a 3km route while carrying a 15kg Doko. The event will culminate in a final race that sees the best Ocdt from across the senior term compete in a best-effort event.

3. Aim. To spread awareness and raise funds for humanitarian disaster relief to support communities in Nepal that have been affected by the current crisis. The event will also aim to grow bonds throughout the RMAS, the Nepalese community, and provide an environment to demonstrate Character, Competence and Resilience. This will be achieved by:

a. Encouraging thinking, leadership and the understanding of individual strengths and weaknesses, in line with the Army Leadership model.

b. Spread awareness of the humanitarian crisis happening in Nepal and raise funds for further aid through the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund.

c. Further develop links with the Gurkha community.

d. Encourage the competitive spirit across the senior term by making the Doko Race an event for everyone with representatives from every platoon.
