I've raised £1000 to Exeter Ethiopia Link Year of the Girl

From Monday 25th April - Friday 6th May a group of four of us will be riding from Land's End to John O'Groats a journey of about 1000 miles (by the route we will be taking). This is a self-organised cycle and we will be aiming to cover around 100 miles a day. Whilst undertaking this once-in-a-lifetime achievement, we will be raising money to support a charity close to my heart. For many years, whilst in retirement, my mother has traveled to a little known and impoverished region of the world to support the education of young people and change their lives through improving opportunity. Her tireless efforts have helped strong links to be formed between UK schools and those in Ethiopia, bring books to schools where there were few if any, as well provide librarians and teacher training.

This year the charity’s focus is ‘The Year of the Girl’ where they are aiming to reduce inequality and promote health, safety and well-being for girls living in the Nekemte area of Ethiopia. For many years, girls in this region have been unable to access education easily, many having to live lives of subjugation. The charity supports schools directly and has worked to develop libraries , support the employment of librarians and train teachers to effectively deliver the teaching of reading.
