As many of you will know my beard has been getting steadily out of control for the last 12 months. It's time for it to go, but I would like to raise some money for a couple of causes close to my heart.

First is Macmillan. As a GP I work closely with Macmillan on an almost daily basis. They do incredible work, something I experienced on a personal level when my mum was unwell with cancer in 2008-9. Sadly she passed away in August 2009 but we had amazing support as a family from the Macmillan team.

Secondly is my Explorer Scout Unit. I have volunteered with my local Scout group for over 5 years now, having benefited from being a Scout myself some years ago. In order to offer the widest range of activities at an accessible price we always need to raise funds. This is one way to do this.

I plan to split whatever is raised evenly between Macmillan and my Explorers. I'd like to raise £500 for shaving my beard off. If I can get to £1000 I am planning to shave my head too! Further goals will be considered if I raise more than £1000, perhaps involving waxing strips...
