Story
Four unprepared lads take on over 400km of rolling Welsh Hills (Snowdonia & The Brecon Beacons), featuring a seat scarring incline of over 5000m.
We’re undertaking this challenge on the 25th August to raise money for UK registered African wildlife Trust and The Teenage Cancer Trust. Both of us would like to say a huge thank you to Liam Owens, and James Beckett for naively agreeing to join us on this mammoth cycle. Which Sustrans calls "one of the toughest of all the long-distance routes in the UK."
Every day more elephant and rhino are illegally slaughtered. You can help protect them. Covid-19 has hit the world hard and African wildlife is no exception. A lack of safari tourists this year has meant a reduction in the 'eyes and ears' on the ground who can keep watch for signs of illegal poaching, and with safari industries struggling so too are the local economies who rely on them for employment and bringing income into rural Africa. This is compounding the poaching problem and making the life of the national parks rangers even more difficult, with devastating effects on game populations throughout Africa.
The Tashinga Initiative, winner of the 2020 Rhino Conservation awards, is partnered with Conservation Zambezi, a UK registered charity. Rory has worked with these people firsthand, who put themselves on the wildlife front-line fighting to protect the Zambezi corridor of sub Saharan Africa from illegal hunting. Unlike some of the larger charities, 100% of your money will go to providing equipment and support to help the under-appreciated men and women living and dying to protect these incredible animals. It all helps, no matter how small the donation.
These Rangers are our front-line of defense towards continued protection of endangered and critically endangered species such as Elephant, Lion, Pangolin, and Leopard.
Past work includes solar panel & water pump installations, technological upgrades to enhance anti-poaching capabilities, purchasing seeds and equipment to help ensure self sufficiency at some of the worlds most remote anti-poaching stations and much more. Please refer to The Tashinga Initiative & Conservation Zambezi for more info on the inspiring work being done.
Every day, seven young people aged 13-24 hear the words “you have cancer”. They will each need specialised nursing care and support to get them through the toughest times they may have faced.
Teenage Cancer Trust provides expert treatment and support for teenagers and young adults in the UK diagnosed with cancer. Currently they are the only charity providing this much needed care.
The trust was there for Ross' friend and old Keswick Rugby Club team mate James, through his brave fight with cancer. A man who, despite losing an arm and shoulder to Cancer, remained an inspiration to those around him with his positive outlook and comical nature. James sadly passed away in November 2019, before his 24th birthday.
We are doing this ride in the hopes of raising as much money as possible to show our appreciation for the support the Teenage Cancer Trust gives to young people like James, and their families.
If you would like to learn more please visit the Teenage Cancer Trust website, or you can find them on social media.
We are reviewing local lock-down rules along the route and shall be adhering to all Covid-19 related restrictions.

4 years agoWell we made it through snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons... but not without their ups and downs. 1 x broken arm (James) 1 x broken derailleur (Ross) 1 x rear wheel buckled but on James’ bike (Ross) 1 x brake disc bent (Rory) 1 x bike stolen (as we had our celebratory meal in Cardiff - Liam) All in all quite the ordeal, but we’d do it all again in a heartbeat to raise more money for these great charities. Thankyou so much to all those who donated!

4 years agoDay 1 - Holyhead to Caernarfon.. optimal conditions. The missed train, flat tyre and Storm Francis with his 70mph wind and rain only added to the enjoyment. Special thanks to our unfortunate photographers Ali, Iain, Laurens and Greg who were the only others daft enough to brave the weather for a peek of Hollyhead lighthouse. If the thought of us soaked to the bone being blown backwards fills you with joy, feel free to spread the word and share this page.
