Story
The catastrophic effect of waste plastic in the World's Oceans was first brought to light for many of us in the BBC's Blue Planet 2. Since that time colleagues and I have researched just how big the issue really is and looked at how organisations are looking to tackle the problem. Staggering facts such as one "Ocean Garbage Patch" being twice the size of France or that BPA is being leached into the Ocean at an alarming rate are only part of it.
Our aim is to produce our design of Ocean Clean up device in large numbers to start the imperative task of fixing the problem. During our research we've read critiques from Marine Engineers and Biologists on the existing offerings that are already being trialed and believe we have come up with a device that will solve this part of the jigsaw without having the issues we've read about.
Whilst this project is not intended to be a commercial project, as its primary function is to save the World's Oceans, opportunities for sponsorship on each device and the hugely positive PR for helping to fund this project cannot be underestimated. The progress of the project will be reported across a multitude of media platforms, including the manufacturing process, device launches at the Ocean Gyres, the collection/emptying of the devices.
Many millions of pounds/dollars are spent a year by companies such as Coca-Cola, Schweppes, Pepsi, Unilever to name but a few on marketing and a fraction of that could be channeled into making this device a reality. Of course big business is not the only way we hope to raise the money, every single pound will make a difference.
