Story

Help us acknowledge Rotherhithe's history and its key role in London's maritime history!

Rotherhithe Illuminated! is a community-led legacy lighting scheme which aims to highlight specific elements of a number of historic buildings within the Rotherhithe Conservation Area and enhance the riverside public realm.

When illuminated, the spire of St. Mary’s, a 18C Grade II* listed church, will be visible from London Bridge, Tower Bridge, from the Thames Path, from across the river in Wapping, and to people travelling along the river on boats and ships at night. The church has many historic connections, including links to the Mayflower and HMS Temeraire.

The illumination of the two figurines on The Old Schoolhouse and the memorial to Christopher Jones, Master of the Mayflower, will complement the lighting installation for the spire and clocks of the nearby church. The cluster of buildings included in the lighting scheme is a harmonious grouping in the tapestry of the public domain. Illuminating them will provide a tangible connection to both the immediate and the wider community and will help to foster wellbeing and pride of place.

Rotherhithe Illuminated! paused its fundraising activities during 2020. However, a bid has recently been submitted to the Mayor of London for funds to illuminate the recently restored figures on the Old Schoolhouse. The Make London programme aims to support communities to create new and impactful projects that help their neighbourhoods recover from the pandemic. Donations towards the overall RI! lighting scheme, continue to be very welcome. RI! is aiming to commission lighting installations in late 2021
