Story
Help us acknowledge Rotherhithe's history and its key role in London's maritime history!
Rotherhithe Illuminated! is a community-led legacy lighting scheme which aims to highlight specific elements of a number of historic buildings within the Rotherhithe Conservation Area and enhance the riverside public realm.
When illuminated, the spire of St. Mary’s, a 18C Grade II* listed church, will be visible from London Bridge, Tower Bridge, from the Thames Path, from across the river in Wapping, and to people travelling along the river on boats and ships at night. The church has many historic connections, including links to the Mayflower and HMS Temeraire.
Rotherhithe Illuminated! are delighted to announce that following a successful fund raising campaign, the two figurines on The Old Schoolhouse are now illuminated every evening.
The Master of the Mayflower, Christopher Jones, was buried in the churchyard of St Mary’s church on 5th March 1622. Rotherhithe Illuminated! are hopeful that the funding target to illuminate his memorial and St Mary's spire and clock faces will be achieved during 2022.
The cluster of buildings included in the lighting scheme is a harmonious grouping in the tapestry of the public domain. Illuminating them will provide a tangible connection to both the immediate and the wider community and will help to foster wellbeing and pride of place.
