Rowing for Songs

On Saturday, 08th September 2018 the Great River Race is taking place again. It's a 21.6 mile marathon on the Thames from Poplar (East London) to Richmond (West London). This event will see over 300 different boats participating. It will include rowing boats, dragon boats - in fact, any type of boat as long as it's propelled by human power alone - no motors allowed. I will sweep row a Cutter (one oar) as part of the "Royal Dolphins" with whom I have already completed two Great River Races in 2016 and 2017. I'm hoping for the 2018 race to be our best race yet. Our crew is made up of six individuals - male & female - who all have some form of disability. We'll also have got one abled bodied passenger in the boat who can act as a substitute for a rower, if needs be and we'll have an abled bodied cox to steer the boat. To give you an idea on how much stamina is required in 2016 we took over 3 hours to complete the race and last year we took over 4 hours as we had to row against the tide for the last part of the race owed to a late start. We are the only disabled crew taking part in the race. Despite taking longer than abled bodied crews we've never given up and have completed the race on every ocassion thanks to the brilliant trainers at the Royal Docks Adventure Rowing Club.

This year I'd like to take the opportunity to raise money for a new project the choir "Eclectic Voices" of which I'm a member has recently launched: The New Music Fund.

At EV we've always been rightly proud of our enthusiasm for new music and for including new compositions in our repertoire. By creating the New Music Fund we're taking this principle a step further.

The EV New Music Fund will be

- Used to commission new works from composers for EV to learn and perform

- Supported entirely by donations, grants fundraising or sponsorship

By creating the New Music Fund Eclectic Voices will enable less known composers to kick-start their career and in turn will have the opportunity to deliver fresh music to our audiences. Music that has never been heard before!

Rowing and Music are my two biggest passions in life. I hope you'll be able to sponsor me to help getting this project on the way.

Many thanks!
