Story
We are running the Edinburgh Marathon Team Relay on 27th May to help raise money for Rebecca #raiseforrebecca. Rebecca was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive child cancer in January 2018. She is now undergoing extensive chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery however, the likelihood of this cancer recurring within 2 years is a massive 80%. Her family are trying to raise £140,000 to pay for treatment in America to prevent this happening.
The description below is taken from her family's page;
"Rebecca was diagnosed with a rare Children's cancer (Stage 4 High Risk Neuroblastoma) on 31st of January 2018.
Neuroblastoma is a rare and aggressive disease that affects around 100 children each year in the UK. It has the highest mortality rate than any other children cancer.
By the time of her diagnosis, Rebecca primary tumours were in her tummy and in her adrenal glands just above her kidneys. The disease then spread to her bone marrow and finally her bones.
The treatment she is on is very intense, given over a 12/18 month period. Rebecca is currently receiving 90 days of Rapid COJEC Chemotherapy. After that, she will have surgery to remove the main tumour followed by another round of high dose chemo, a stem cell transplant and finally 3 weeks of radiotherapy. Even after putting her through chemotherapy, countless surgeries and aggressive radiotherapy, the chance of relapse within two years is as high as 80%.
Armed with that knowledge, we set out to learn everything we could about the disease and possible treatments. Our search led us to an American drug trial called DFMO. This is a preventative treatment which helps decrease the chance of relapse and the cancer returning. Unfortunately this isn’t a treatment available on the NHS yet and we need your help to get us on that trial.
To be eligible for the trial, we need Rebecca to be cancer free for 120 days and raise £140,000 to pay for treatment and costs associated. This is a huge amount to raise and we know it will not be without its difficulties but we have to try.
We all know someone affected by cancer, whether it’s a parent, grandparent, son or daughter. You would do anything you could to make them well again and we are no different. This isn’t the first time cancer has devastated our family and while we know the loss and pain it can bring, we won’t let it win this time. We need any donation, no matter how big or small, to help get Rebecca well again and back to being the bravest little girl we know. "
