I'm Vik. I don't like running; but I'm going to be running the Cardiff 10k for my patients who can't. I work on the spinal injuries unit at University Hospital of Wales and have seen seen how peoples lives can change in an instant. Whether this is through cancer, a sporting injury, a car accident or crossing the road, some of my patients have had their lives changed for ever when they've received the diagnosis a spinal cord injury. Their lives may never be the same again.
Myself and the AMAZING team that I am privileged to work with hope to bring a bit of normality to these patients lives during the acute stage of their injury. Many patients are put on flat bed rest, sometimes for 12 weeks, where all they can look at is the ceiling of our ward.
Im running the 10k to try an raise some money for the ward to buy specilaist Ipad and phone holders that can be positioned over the patient so they can watch something, other than the ceiling, to take their mind off their diagnosis and given theme back a bit of normality. An ipad holder is £20, a phone holder £10. In an ideal world we would have either one of these available for each of our 19 patients on our ward. I appreciate that this is a huge ask, but even if we just had enough equipment for half of these patients we'd be able to make a huge difference to so many patients lives.
Please please donate whatever you can. Love your NHS. Remember that we are here for you and we will always do our best for you, should you ever need us.
