Story

Between 2003-18, UCS raised about £130 000 for ECS. This money has two purposes – to fund the development and building off the school, and to support bursaries for students from poorer families, particularly those children who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. To help this, Transitus students have, for several years now, taken part in a ‘Make a Difference Day’, a sponsored walk in central London. This helps to raise money for bursaries for ECS students.
The rate of HIV/AIDS infection is high, even though Uganda had made huge strides in educationn and HIV prevention programmes. Deaths from AIDS have reduced Uganda’s life expectancy to 49 for men and 51 for women. Families affected by AIDS suffer; costs of treatment are high, reduced energy brought by illness means that less work is done, so incomes suffer. Death means the loss of a wage earner and debt from of funeral costs. AIDS orphans are cared for by school grants; ECS has raised money for 50. Orphans otherwise drop out of school; few enter secondary education.
