Story

SUMMARY

Traditional and legal norms for property rights and land tenure in this area give little room for women to contribute in economic development. Above 70% of single mothers have no vocational skills for financial empowerment and live below 60 dollars a month. This has led to financial difficulties for most homes. This project is an effort to work with single women in poverty alleviation actions. The women will be train on the production of different household detergents for economic empowerment.

Challenge

The tradition and legal system of the nation holds very little place for the development of girls, single mothers and their children. The have limited vocational skills, very small revenue and support from men. The result is very minimal financial resources to sustain their families. This have often led to early marriages and unwanted pregnancies for their female children, school drop out, uncontrolled sex life for both the mother and girl children, child labor and poorly brought up children.

Solution

This project will build the capacity of 50 young girls (age from 20 to 35) and 100 single mothers (single female parents and widows) on the production of different household detergents for economic empowerment. They will be able to provide basic household needs; send their children to school; increase the social status of their household; reduce the problem of early marriages, unwanted pregnancies and idle life style. Detergents are everyday needs for all classes of people with high demand.

Long-Term Impact

Creation self sustained enterprises own by a single mother or group of women; Improved living conditions; increase in employment and community development; Transfer of knowledge to children and to local community members; Reduced dependence of these women on men and less destructive life of harassment, suppression, prostitution, stigmatization and backwardness
