    Story

    WE FOUND OUR SAFE SPACE!

WE ARE JUST £100,000 short of the asking price for this beautiful safe house complete with many rooms and facilities, and a lovely garden.

It seems a lot doesn't it, but we have already raised several times that amount and this is the final stretch to finally achieve what has been 6 years in the planning.

The idea behind our specialist refuge, is that victims of domestic abuse, including women with children can be accommodated safely for anything between 1 night and 10 days, while an alternative adequate safe space is found or a 'mainstream' refuge is located.

The space will be accessible 24hrs a day in case of emergencies and will be (wo-)manned full time.

Because of issues around 'adultifcation' of black children, we will will use our discretion to accept children up to and including 16 years of age until other arrangements can be made.

    VALERIE FORDE'S STORY.

"YOUR MUM AND BABY SISTER WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN" Ngozi made this promise to Valerie's daughter and other children as they stood outside the courtroom.

VALERIE'S STORY IS AN NOT ISOLATED ONE.

Valerie Forde, was murdered in Hackney, London on the 31/03/2014 after reporting to the police that a threat was made to her life and the lives of her children. It was logged as a 'Threat to property' and no safeguarding mechanisms were activated. Very shortly after, Valerie and her 22 month old baby daughter, RJ were viciously murdered by her ex partner who was child's father.

On the 1st May 2021, we launched, VALERIE'S LAW Compulsory Training for Agencies Supporting Black DV Victims.

CAMPAIGN ENDS 24th DECEMBER A massive thank you for standing with us during the 16 Days of Activism & since. Unfortunately, we've all learned first-hand what abuse against women looks like at it's worst. We are grateful to all who have donated so far. Thanks to your donations to our charity bank account and website, we have raised over £70,000 in total, just £30,000 short of our aim. We believe we can still achieve our target and purchase a specialist safe space for domestic abuse survivors. WE WISH YOU ALL A SAFE & HAPPY XMAS & NEW YEAR

JUST A QUICK WORD OF THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE SUPPORTED US DURING THIS VERY TURBULENT TIME WE WERE FORCED TO CEASE OPERATIONS FOR OVER A WEEK, BUT NOW WISH TO BRING THE FOCUS BACK TO THOSE WOMEN IN NEED, WHO HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO ACCESS OUR SERVICE FOR AN EXTENDED TIME. THE 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM (25th November - 10th December) is when the elimination of violence against women should be highlighted. Tomorrow (Saturday) marks the end of the 16 days, please show some support by pushing the message that ABUSE, INCLUDING VERBAL & ONLINE, is unacceptable

We are very encouraged by the amount of support for this initiative. It has been a challenge at times, which is understandable under the current climate. However, the rising cost of living has seen domestic abuse increase significantly and so it is imperative we have culturally appropriate safe spaces available. We were given a big boost by FKA Twiggs and we really think we will be able to purchase the refuge by the end of the 16 Days of Activism which is between the 25th November and 10th December 2022 Thank you all who continue to support

SISTAH SPACE WAS FOUNDED IN 2015 AFTER THE BRUTAL MURDERS OF VALERIE FORDE AND 1 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER, RJ. THE INADEQUATE RESPONSE OF MAINSTREAM SERVICES TO BLACK VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE HAS CAUSED MAJOR CONCERN AND HAS HIGHLIGHTED THE NEED FOR THIS SPECIALIST SAFE SPACE.
