Story

The Museum Society needs to raise £10,880 in total by May 2019 to secure these 4 very special locally-found archaeological treasure objects for the Museum:

1) Medieval gold reliquary cross-pendant, 14th-15th century, discovered in the Farnham area. This is a rare and exquisite piece, which would have held a tiny relic. A wealthy person owned & lost this over 500 yrs ago – it would be a star addition to the Museum’s displays of treasures from the district.

2) Late Saxon silver Penny of Harold II c.1066, found in the Ugley area. Harold II reigned for less than a year before he fell at the Battle of Hastings. This is a rare opportunity to acquire for future generations to enjoy a coin from a very significant year in English history!

3) Post Medieval gold Posy Ring. Late 17th – early 18th century, found in the Lindsell area.

4) Bronze Age gold and copper alloy Penannular Ring
c. 1,150– 750BC, found in the Lindsell area.

We hope to raise at least 45% of the funds needed through grants, but we need to raise at least £5,000 locally to secure these significant treasure items, so that they can be enjoyed and studied by local residents, visitors and students for current and future generations to come. Our aim is to display them in the Museum and create education & learning sessions related to them for local schools & community groups. Can you help us bring these archaeological treasures home so that they can be enjoyed by current and future generations to come.

The reliquary pendant and rings have been declared treasure under the Treasure Act 1996. Saffron Walden Museum is the accredited public museum for Uttlesford (NW Essex), operated by UDC in partnership with Saffron Walden Museum Society Ltd. The Museum Society owns the Museum collections and is responsible for purchasing new acquisitions.

(All funds will go to Saffron Walden Museum Society Ltd - registered charity 1123209 - for the purchase of these archaeological treasures)
