I am a 17 year old A level student working closely with charity called porridge and rice. after being both mentored and tutored by the owner of this charity, ken, i grew to learn a lot about how the charity worked and more importantly the dire poverty it was functioning for. porridge and rice now partnes with 6 schools across nairobi and, in a country in which a quarter of the population suffer from starvation, feeds more than 1000 children a day.

in 2016 i became a committee member for porridge and rice, as a team we actively fundraising at school fairs and charity events to raise money for the day-to-day necessities (i realize now) i was taking great advantage of. the money was distributed to pay for rice, porridge and clothing for the children (who were aged x-x). Together we would often return back from these events and celebrate great achievements, and simply being able to witness and be part of something so important and moving.

however functioning from our base in England it was easy to forget about the much wider part of the charity functioning in Kenya. i have been given the opportunity to travel to Kenya this summer, working closely with the children subject to the great poverty in the slums of Nairobi. as i am aspiring to read dentistry in the near future, i have been placed on the dental hygiene program - informing the student son the importance and practical custom of oral health care.

to witness a project so intimately, that i have been a part almost indirectly; to see where the pieces i hold, of a much bigger (and growing) puzzle, will fit is a dream - and i need your help to get there!
