Online Bake Sale!!!
Help us provide access to basic necessities to struggling families in Egypt, in partnership with Help Club at the American University in Cairo.
Welcome back to the 4th year of my annual online bake sale! I call this the 'Everyone Wins' Fundraiser, because all parties involved do truly win. You get to donate and receive baked goodies in return, I get to bake which is what I love doing, and most importantly we get to collectively help people in need.
The rules are simple: You kindly donate a minimum of £15 to this page, make sure to add your name and I will privately message you to take your postal brownie/cookies order, which will get delivered to your door to thank you for your generosity.
NOTE: The online bake sale is limited to those based in the UK/British Isles, however, donations are not limited to these places if you're feeling extra generous. :)
Thank you so much to those who continue to support this fundraiser each year. I know it can be difficult to choose from the many places in the world where people are struggling. Especially with some global issues receiving more coverage than others, it can be difficult to choose which cause deserves the most funding. But the main idea is that every penny that you donate to a good cause, is a life that you help change.
About the Charity:
This year, I decided to partner up with my amazing friend Sara Younis, a psychology student at the American University in Cairo (AUC) and ex-president of Help Club, a student led organization serving the Egyptian Community and beyond since 1995.
Throughout the past 28 years, Help Club has supported thousands of families in the most underprivileged areas in Egypt. In the last year only, the food packs were delivered to more than 6000 households and over 20 students have received access to education.
You can see some of their work by clicking here to view their Facebook and Instagram Page
How Your Donations Will Help?
Both myself and Sara will be going to Egypt in June to help prepare the food packs with the money raised from this fundraisers, and will film the process for you from start to finish, so you can see the impact of your donations.
I will be posting this on my baking Instagram page once the fundraiser is complete.
Why Should You Help Egypt?
It goes without saying that Egypt is known for its incredible ancient architecture, rich culture and heritage. What sometimes tends to get overlooked, however, are the locals living through deep economic depression in recent years.
Much like economic downturn and higher cost of living here in the UK, Egypt is currently suffering from added pressures brought by the devaluation of the Egyptian pounds against the Dollar, falling from EGP 15.8 to the US currency in March 2022, to EGP 30.5 this week. (FT , 2023) This has caused severe shortages in imported goods into the country, and sharp increase in inflation rates which reached up to 31.9 percent for annual headline inflation, and a whopping 40.26 percent for core inflation. (Carnegie, 2023)
Tens of millions of people will be struggling to put food on their tables as the Egyptian pound has fallen to record lows and inflation soars, with the reality being that more than 60 million out of Egypt's 107 million population will be living below or just above the poverty line.
However, with the currency being that way it is, it puts us in a good position to help as we will have higher purchasing power, so every penny will truly help. For perspective, £1 = EGP 38 - This means that the minimum £15 donation will equal to approx EGP 576, which in Egypt could help pay for necessities for at least one family.
