Story
My name is Sam Formby and I live in Ormskirk. I grew up in Scarisbrick, at the age of 16 I suffered a brain haemorrhage which left me in a critical state. I was in intensive care for a month on a life support machine. After I came round from my coma, I could not move and was fed through a tube, I also could not see properly or talk. I also caught Meningitis and MRSA. Then I moved out of intensive care into the Children’s Ward for the next 4 months. When I was 17 years old I had to move out of the Children’s Ward because I was too old, I moved out to a Rehabilitation Centre behind Fazakerley Hospital where I spent between 8 and 9 months. I moved home to Scarisbrick where we lived in a little cottage but my wheel chair could not get into the house so I lived in a static caravan for 4 years whist they built an extension on the house. Whilst living the caravan I did not socially interact suffering depression and Anxiety I could not be around people without being sick.
When I was 20 years old I moved out to the extension and I started at Edge Hill Gym where I trained for 13 years. At the age of 25 I moved to Ormskirk, I have now lived here for 11 years. I live independently with support from Carers.
Going to the gym and exercising has become the main focus in my life. At the age of 33 i moved gyms to Active nation in Ormskirk, I was there for 2 years, I then move to Everlast gym in Southport and I am still there. Exercising and going to the gym has given me a different out look on life, one of positivity and thankfulness for what I have got and what I have achieved. My attitude is that of never give up and stay strong. At the age of 21 I completed a half marathon on my hand cycle and went on the complete a full marathon on my hand cycle at the age of 29.
I am setting up a Charity which allow me to give back my passion and positivity to other Disabled people and other people experiencing difficulties. I want to encourage people to go to the gym, develop a never give up attitude and a positive out look on life. I will do this by supporting myself and the Charity to motivate people to live their best lives and motivational speaking.
05/06/2023, 20 years ago today my life changed forever. When I came out of my coma I thought my life was over because I have kept moving forward and never gave up. I want to create a charity to give other people who are going through life changing times, I want to give them hope and inspire them to keep going. Please can you donate to my Just Giving page to make this dream come true. I will then be able to help more people. Please share this, thank you
