Story
Sam Smith was born in 1979 with cystic fibrosis and only expected to live into his teenage years. With remarkable support from the cystic fibrosis ward in Leeds he survived into his early 30s. Then, in early 2011, when very ill, a double lung transplant in Newcastle restored him to health and gave him some wonderful years to spend with his family & friends. Sadly, a form of transplant rejection meant that in early 2019, Sam passed away with lung failure.
Sam was a remarkable and inspirational man. Always upbeat and positive, always thinking about others. He touched so many lives - in his job working with some of the most disadvantaged communities in Leeds, and in his personal life where his caring, joyful attitude impressed everyone who knew him. Sam never let his illness define him, and even in his darkest times simply fought for a brighter tomorrow.
Sam used every minute of life. He loved cooking and crafting, gaming and gardening. He travelled widely including trips to America, Morocco, Australia, Iceland, Spain, Disneyland, and many more. It was in Japan, in 2008, that Dave proposed to him. In 2010, they entered into a civil partnership, and in 2014 they adopted a little boy who joined their loving family.
Family meant everything to Sam - his Mum and Dad, his brothers Stuart and Danny, and his grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles, all filled his thoughts. He was a loyal friend, who loved nothing more than a drink, a chat, a laugh and a story - he was much loved by all those who knew him.
His dying wish was to give something back to the hospital wards that offered him so much. Donations can make massive differences to people who must spend long periods of time in a hospital room - DVD players, games consoles, free internet access, relatives' rooms, chill-out zones, patient kitchens. All donations will be spent in close liaison with the two wards.
A great husband, an amazing Pop, a loving family member and a wonderful friend. Sam is much missed by so many.

5 years agoAs the fund continues to grow, I just wanted to reassure people that all proceeds, including those above the target, will go to Sam's designated causes of the two hospital wards. If the wards were, for any reason, unable to use all of the extra funds raised in supporting their key patient/relative focussed projects, any remainder would be donated to the CF Trust.

Stumbled across your twitter account and was touched by your family's story, your caring words, and your loving way with the 6yo. Wish you both well.

I only met Sam a few times, but he touched my heart - he was fun and easy to talk to. Fond memories of talking with him about gardening and the allotment. Dave my thoughts are with you and Dexter.
