    Story

On Friday 14th May 2021, Elland Silver Band had a major flood in their rehearsal rooms caused by a burst pipe in their music library causing extensive water damage the entrance hall, toilets, music library, mutes and kitchen cupboards. Fortunately it didn't reach the two rehearsal halls.

Around 50% of the music library suffered water damage, including electrics, shelving and some 400 sets of sheet music, hymn & march books, various cornet cup, straight, harmon, bucket and tin cornet mutes. Initial estimates of the damage are likely to be in excess of £15,000.

Thanks to the quick thinking of our neighbours on the allotment society we were able to attend within the hour and turn off the water supply to prevent further damage.

A team of volunteers have commenced the clean up operation working through the affected areas to identify music which was dry, items which could be saved and those completely destroyed. A number of irreplaceable original works and compositions were affected and will require specialist work to restore. Also many scores and parts with notes and markings from former players and musical directors have also been destroyed spanning the organization's 171 year history.

The organisation has been left with a huge clean up operation to carry out remedial works to plumbing, shelving and replacing water damaged cupboards which house equipment in addition to the extensive sheet music.

Just as we are about to commence rehearsals again following the pandemic, this couldn't have happened at a worse time, we are all devasted, thankfully we were able to respond quickly

Whilst the organisation is working with insurer's we are seeking donations to help fund the costs of the initial remedial work to restore our water supply and electricty, to prevent us needing to access our funds which support our music making.
