    Story

    Suggested amounts:

Tuition: £150 will pay for 1 month of tuition fees (10 x months)

Accommodation: £180 will pay for 1 month of accommodation (10 x months)

Food: £170 will pay for 1 month of cost of food (10 x months)

I met Sammy in Accra in 2014 through his father who is a builder. His mother works as a hairdresser. Sammy attended my old boarding school, Achimota Secondary School.

It became clear to me the first time I met him, that he was extremely hard-working, enthusiastic about his studies and determined to succeed in life. Sammy told me that he had gained a place at University of Ghana to study Geography and French. I had studied French at secretarial school and my daughter had also studied French at university. Her French saw rapid improvement during a 6 month study-abroad in Toulouse in the south of France. Her confidence increased, she gained a distinction in French speaking in her undergraduate degree and is now able to confidently apply for work opportunities in French-speaking countries. I was keen for Sammy to have the same opportunity as my daughter but I realised early on that this would be a great financial challenge for his family.

    Sammy's university, University of Ghana

As Sammy performed so well in his university entrance exams, he has a bursary to study in Ghana. However, to achieve his dream of studying abroad, Sammy and his parents will have 6000 euros to cover the costs of accommodate, food and fees to attend Université de Poitiers which is about 215 miles to the south-west of Paris.

Sammy is working on securing sponsorship from Ghanaian governmental institutions and banks. He is also fundraising through family and friends. On his behalf I approached some Ghanaian companies for sponsorship but was unsuccessful.

He will need to apply for his visa in June so that is the target we are working towards. I am optimistic and hopeful that people who have been fortunate enough to enjoy educational opportunities that have improved their prospects will help me to help Sammy.

I'd like your help in raising money to help reach the target of £5000 to study abroad in France and achieve his goal of studying abroad.
