Story

In August 2012, two days after his 16th Birthday, Samuel had an accident while playing with his friends, which resulted in fractures to his cervical vertebrae (broken C4 and cracked C3 and C5 damaging his spinal cord) and quadriplegia, meaning that he has no movement of both arms and legs.

Initial surgery in Slovakia followed by stem cells and OEC cell treatment in Beijing, China in 2013 and 2014 did not have a good result. All the overseas’ medical costs, accommodation and travel totaling more than EUR 40.000 have been funded by Samuel’s family.

Samuel requires 24/7 assistance to meet all his physical needs, and this is provided by his mother but with very limited support by Slovak social services. All Samuel’s regular rehabilitating sessions to maintain muscle mass and joints mobility (3 times a year for 2-weeks each time in Adeli Piestany and 3 times a year in Sopran, Hungary) costing thousands of Euros are being fully funded by Samuel's family, as none of these are covered by national insurance or social service funds.

Today there are pioneering surgical, microchip and stem cell treatments that may be suitable for Samuel, but as they are still experimental they are not covered by the current health insurance scheme in Slovakia. Samuel, now 20, would like to try these experimental treatments to improve his independence and thus the quality of his life as well as that of their parents.

It has been 4 years since the accident, and now the family’s financial resources are fully stretched. Please help me help Samuel’s family.
