Story
Mission Rabies states: Across the world, 61,000 people die of Rabies each year. Over 99% of cases of human rabies are caused by an infected dog bite. Once symptoms of the disease develop, it is always fatal.
Every year, millions of healthy dogs are inhumanely killed for fear of this deadly disease. However, this doesn't halt the spread of rabies. Vaccinating dogs against rabies has been proven to stop the spread of the disease to people and saves the lives of humans and dogs. Simply culling dogs doesn't help, as other dogs move into the vacant areas.
The past year has been a challenge for me. Due to various health issues, I was unable to follow my passion - triathlons. But, like everyone says: 'Where one door closes, another opens' and I have had a lot of time to think and reflect. Its made me realise how lucky I am, living my save and secure life with so many support systems and excellent healthcare.
It also reminded me that to grow and learn , we have to venture out of our comfort zone. For years, I have known about Mission Rabies and have supported the vet charity, WVS, and have thought about going on one of their volunteer trips. And yet, there are the usual excuses: too expensive (most of these trips are self- funded and don't come cheap), not enough time, I am too busy - you get the idea.
Not anymore.
I am going on a volunteering trip to vaccinate dogs against Rabies in Sri Lanka in September. It will be a challenge, I know that. But it is time that I step up, get stuck in and physically make a difference.
I am asking you to help me do this.
Help me raise funds for Mission Rabies to support their work.
Help me get to Sri Lanka by helping me pay for flights and trip costs (shared accommodation, food, local transport, my vaccinations, visas).
Any money raised over and above the amount needed for the trip will be donated to Mission Rabies directly

7 years agoAnd so the planning and preparation continues. My passport with visa is ready to go. Travel vaccinations done. Packing soon to be done. Excitement levels rising. Have been in contact with Samantha and Mark from Dogstar Foundation who do a lot of great work out there as well. Their fridges are stacked full with Rabies vaccination, leaflets are ready to be handed out. Today in a week the team will be getting ready! Oh yes - and have been collecting rubbish still whilst I can (don't always have a camera with me)

7 years agoFirst of all - a huge thank you to everyone who has shown their support! Those of you who donated - thank you, I really, really am grateful. I have also upped the anti and have decided that I will start collecting rubbish in my local area. Yes, I call it 'trash for cash'. By doing this, I am hoping to keep Bognor cleaner, prevent litter ending up in our beautiful countryside or get eaten by seabirds, pets and other wildlife. So, excuse the rubbish pictures for now - soon, these will be replaced by dogs that you are helping.

Amazing cause Sandra! Rabies is a horrific, 100% fatal and 100% preventable disease affecting people and animals. Wishing you all the best.

I am a small animal vet, working in the UK. I have worked with and for various charities in this country to help animals where I can and support others who do work abroad. Now it is time for me to do more and help where and how I can.
