Weʼve raised £10,022 to fund a Memorial to the Guinea Pig Club, formed by 649 badly burned WWII airmen. I am one of only 18 who are still alive. Please help.

    What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered nonprofit.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

    Story

On 20th July 2016 it will be the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the 'Guinea Pig Club', a unique club formed by badly burned pilots and aircrew in WWII, who had been treated by the pioneering plastic surgeon, Sir Archibald McIndoe at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead.
The Club was formed with a committee and Sir Archibald was its President. The Secretary was a pilot with badly burned fingers, which meant that he was excused from writing any letters or Minutes. The Treasurer was a member whose legs were burned and this ensured that he could not abscond with the funds. Initially the Club was intended to be a drinking club, which would disband at the end of the war. However it grew in strength from year to year and has remained as a club of group support throughout the members' lives, which has helped them to go on to lead normal, useful lives. By the end of the war there were 649 'Guinea Pigs', 62% British, 20% Canadian, 6% Australians, 6% New Zealanders and 6% from many other countries including the Czech Republic and Poland. They continued to keep in touch several times a year, although as the years have passed, fewer and fewer of them are alive and of those who are, many are unable to travel. At the moment there are 18 'Guinea Pigs' alive in the UK and about 10 overseas.

Although I am 93, I am the most fit and mobile member. A fitting memorial to the Club is to be unveiled in the National Memorial Arboretum, Staffordshire, in November of this year. The cost of the memorial will be £20,000+ VAT and I have set myself the task of raising as much money as I can towards this project.

Please help me if you can. Any donations, how ever small, will be gratefully received.

    Thank you.

      Update from the Page owner

A very big 'THANK YOU' to all 179 of you who donated and between you raised the wonderful amount of £10,022 towards the 'Guinea Pig Club' Memorial Fund. The stonemason is working hard and if you watch TV on Wednesday 2 November you may see his work being unveiled and dedicated in a special ceremony. This tribute to the GPC will be there in the NMA for future generations to remember a unique group of badly injured and burned Allied Airmen from WWII. Thank you for making Sandy's vision become a reality. We can't thank you enough. X End of Page

You wonderful people you have given me birthday present. Thank you so much. We are now busy writing the official invitations for the unveiling and dedication ceremony, which will take place at 2pm on Wednesday 2 November in the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire. Sadly we can only invite 80 guests. We should have loved you all to be with us on this special day. However, the NMA is open to the public and has free admission so if you would like to join us you could come and watch with the general public. See you there?

Sandy has now done 3 weeks of radiotherapy and is coping well - only one more week to go! Next week is my birthday so it would be a wonderful present if the donations could reach £10K before the page closes. Please help if you can and see if you can persuade some of your friends to join in the fundraising. The stonemason has started on the monument so things are getting very exciting.

Last week three year old twins did a sponsored triathlon round our village, running from the church, cycling down the next road and then scooting back to the Village Hall. Sandy and I were amazed to hear that they had raised£642! If they can do that at their young age it would be wonderful if you could help us reach £10K before this site closes. Sandy starts 4 weeks of radiotherapy on Monday so please keep your fingers crossed for him. Thank You.

I am the proud wife of Sandy Saunders [93yrs] who is a member of the 'Guinea Pig Club'. Sandy received 40% burns when he crashed in 1945. He was treated by Archibald McIndoe and joined the Club. Watching McIndoe operate inspired him to become a GP. He practised in Nottingham.
