Story
I co-lead a group of children at Stonelaw High School who raise funds for learners in our partner school, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. We run a Fair Trade stall and use all the profits to purchase uniforms for learners in Ikusasalethu High School. Each year we take a few pupils - four this year - to the high school in South Africa to distribute the uniforms and learn more about life in the area of extreme deprivation. Many of the pupils are AIDS orphans who live in dire conditions, with no running water, lack nourishment and with limited access to electricity. As a group we raise as much as we can and take donated clothing for the neediest pupils. We attend school for two weeks, enabling pupils to learn more about the culture and needs of South African children, and develop their skills in citizenship and develop an appreciation and understanding of cultural values, identities and ideas.
