I'm raising £500 to help save Sappho's Cafe and Community Space, by swimming 10K

Story

We are swimming 10k to raise money for Sapphos Cafe and Community Space.

Sappho's opened in November 2025 as a warm and welcome space, and since then has opened as a cafe and community space. Built for the LGBTQIA+ community, Sappho's has hosted many events; we as Plymouth Community Pride have hosted Queer Craft Club and Trinket Trade there, but Sappho's has been the space for so many activities such as life drawing, art classes, film screenings and live performances. Queer safe spaces, especially in the Southwest, are limited, and Sappho's has quickly become a staple and a home in so many queer people's lives.

Unfortunately, the hospitality industry has been hard on the CIC, and grant funding applications have been rejected, so our safe space is at risk of closing its doors if they aren't able to clear their arrears. They have already had to make difficult decisions such as making staff redundant.

We want to do whatever we can to help, because we believe keeping this community space alive is everyone's responsibility. So we are jumping into the sea and pushing ourselves to swim 10k altogether over August.

Hollis, Max, Ell & Brett will be swimming in the sea as a team throughout August to swim 10k collectively over the month.

Please sponsor us if you can; every penny will go directly to saving Sappho's! If you cannot donate, then please share this to get the word out.

And as always, skip the Starbucks and consider supporting your small independent local cafe. ☕
