    Story

The Maidstone Area Parent Support (MAPS) group was set up by a team of Paediatric Diabetic Specialist Nurses and families of children with Type 1 Diabetes.  The group offers much needed support to children with Type 1 Diabetes and their families.
This wonderful support group organises & pays for days out & different experiences for the children based on their ages. It also gives parents much needed support, whether its advice, an emotional rant or supplies when we've run out & can't get to the doctor!!
At the time of diagnosis, it feels like your world has been turned upside down and it's difficult to see how you will ever do certain things again but the MAPS group help new families to see that things will get easier and become more manageable and that there's nothing to stop you and your child from doing 'normal' things. We believe it's invaluable for children with Type 1 Diabetes, their parents and siblings to see that there are other children living with this & that they can get on with everyday things.

The MAPS group and the activities we undertake is all self funded & we are always liking for new ways to raise money and awareness for our children. So, for 3 months over the summer a few of us are aiming to walk 1 milion steps, this averages at 10,000 which will be a big challenge!!

As parents we live with this condition 24/7 but will never truly understand what it is like for our children.

Thank you for reading our story and for your support

My 3year old son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes nearly a year ago. We didn't realise how involved T1D was & how much there was to get our heads around, It turned our world upside down. The MAPS group have been invaluable to us all in so many ways & now I want to do my bit x
