Story

In July Freya is part of a squad from Barnsley Youth Choir (ranked 5th in the world) who are going to represent Great Britain in the World Choir Games. Her and I are walking the entire 96 miles of the West Highland Way in April to raise money to help them get there.

From joining BYC 4 years ago Freya's life has been enriched by the joy it it has brought her. Mine too as a parent, lover of music and more recently as a volunteer. We're not on our own either. From the second BYC finds it's way into your world it becomes one of the most special and important parts of your life. It's inclusive, a family and a place where equality and diversity is embraced. It's unique and very special. On top of all that they are astoundingly good!

The challenge

The West Highland Way is 96 miles across some of the most beautiful parts of Scotland. There are some tough parts - particularly the long stretch along Loch Lomond. The April scottish weather will no doubt be a challenge. We're doing it on our own too, the 2 of us with just a map and a guide book.

Freya didn't take her first steps until after her 3rd birthday. An MRI scan revealed she has something called Peri Ventricular Leucomalcia which is a brain injury she sustained whilst i was pregnant. We were told a whole host of things she might never do, which included running, jumping and riding a bike. Her sheer determination and resilience meant she smashed all of it. Some of the things she suffers with are muscle spasms and standing for long periods can be painful. She refuses to be treated differently or labelled. With that in mind it's fair to say the 96 miles will be a significant challenge for her both mentally and physically. She's already resilient and strong which will serve her well each morning we have to start again but i just know that any donations will keep her focused and will help her push along when the rain is pouring (or maybe even snow).

Anything at all you can donate to send this amazing choir to represent our country will be so gratefully appreciated. The reality is that they can't go without funding and how amazing is it that an unassuming talented youth choir from a Yorkshire town are invited to go and wave our flag for us.

We're going to try and do a daily blog/vlog or whatever you call it so you can follow our progress (anyone who knows me will be acutely aware that this in itself is my biggest challenge)!
