Story
In January 2017, our world changed forever when my eldest son, George, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at just six years old.
Like so many families, we had to learn to navigate a new normal overnight. Wanting to do something positive, both to raise money for research into a cure and to support my own mental wellbeing, I laced up a pair of running trainers and, despite never having run a marathon before, completed the London Marathon in 2018 in support of Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF).
While wandering around the Marathon Expo that year, I spotted the London Classics Medal. I remember thinking, "One day, I'd love to earn one of those." It felt like an impossible dream.
Then life happened. COVID delayed plans, and there was one rather significant obstacle—I couldn't actually swim. Unless doggy paddle counted!
Last summer, everything changed. My youngest son, William, became my coach, mentor and biggest supporter. Using the skills and encouragement he has gained through his own journey with Middlesbrough Amateur Swimming Club, he patiently helped teach his mum how to swim. Alongside William, the incredible coaches at the club have given me the confidence, guidance and belief to chase a dream I never thought was possible.
This September, I'll attempt to complete my London Classics journey. It's about far more than a medal. It's about resilience, family, hope, and proving that it's never too late to take on something that once seemed impossible.
Every donation, no matter the size, will make a real difference. Funds raised will be shared equally between Breakthrough T1D, whose work gives families like ours hope for a future without Type 1 diabetes, and Middlesbrough Amateur Swimming Club, whose coaches—and one very determined young swimmer called William—have helped make this dream a reality.
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page and for supporting me on this journey. Your generosity, encouragement and belief mean more than you know.
