Story

In aid of this project a group of us will be abseiling off the Spinnaker Tower on Sunday 18th June 2023. We have an amazing team who have agreed to take on this brave challenge. This includes Janice, Portsmouth Forest School CIC Directors; Sarah (me 🙂), our volunteer; Dean, friend & Alison, the Director & Forest School Assistant. Mental ill health continues to rise in the UK. There are a number of factors such as childhood abuse, trauma & neglect, social isolation, unemployment, poverty, discrimination, domestic violence & adult trauma, bereavement, severe or long-term stress, more recent the COVID 19 pandemic.
Common mental health conditions include stress, anxiety & depression but a significant number of people may experience bipolar disorder, schizophrenia & eating disorders.
When experiencing a period of mental ill health, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. This can lead to a loss of motivation to do things. It is encouraging to see that mental health illnesses are now recognised in the community & by health professions. People are often treated with medication and but this intervention is not for everyone.
Together, Alison & her partner, Sharon, run Portsmouth Forest School CIC. Based at Hilsea Lines they are a Community Interest Company (not for profit) & their aim is to help people of all ages & backgrounds out into the woods to enjoy the benefits this brings. Nature has a positive effect on mental health which we have witnessed first-hand. The aim of this project is to raise £5000 so we can offer weekly sessions to people who wish to improve their mental health & wellbeing. At these Forest School sessions participants will be able to experience activities such as whittling, fire lighting, outdoor cooking & much more. Participants will have the opportunity to learn new skills and share experiences in a supportive environment. Attending regular sessions will help to grow confidence & build motivation & resilience which will aid their recovery.
