Story
Sasha is a 13 month old beautiful Great Dane puppy, the most friendly gentle giant, our baby. She went to the vet on 10 September, my birthday, because she was retching a lot with rapid breathing and had lost weight. She had an xray which showed fluid in her chest cavity, they drained 1 litre of fluid. Our vet said we saved her life bringing her in because she would have died if we hadn't.That cost £540.
We had to take her to intensive care then a specialist animal hospital the following day.We didn't know if she would make it through the night.I rang about 11pm and was told that she had eaten food, a positive. If they needed to drain more fluid overnight they would ring. That cost £700.
When we picked her up she was so happy to see us.She went for a quick walk, seemed so normal. We took her to the specialist hospital.
Whilst I was filling in the forms they took her in to start tests. I never got to give her a kiss, tell her I love her or give her the 2 toys I had brought to make her feel safe. I havent seen her since😭
She had more fluid on her chest and got drained again, more scans and tests. From the scans they have found that she also has a hole in each of her lungs, one is 10cm, one 6cm.These holes are causing air to drain into her chest cavity too.So far they have drained 1.5 litres of air, and 8 litres of fluid. This is costing £6000.
They don't know why any of this has happened. The holes in her lungs might have been there since birth, and they have absolutely no idea why the fluid is there. They think it could be pleural effusion, but not sure why or how. Tomorrow they will be talking with the soft tissue specialist to see if its all operable or if we have to lose her. The cost of the op will be £10000.
She can't be resuscitated because the chest compressions might make it so much worse.
We had £4000 insurance. Didnt think anything could go that bad in her 1st year! Any help at all to keep my baby alive would be so truly appreciated, thank you so much ❤
