Story

The Save the Northern Meadows community campaign is raising funds to help keep up the ongoing fight against a system that says one thing but does another. Saving 23 acres of important meadowland for the residents of Whitchurch / Coryton, Cardiff and for the wellbeing of future generations.

Though this campaign started at the beginning of 2020, local residents have been fighting to stop development of the Northern Meadows in Whitchurch, Cardiff, for over 20 years. Previously housing was proposed but no developers took the opportunity to build here as there is no road access to the site and it is surrounded on 3 sides by Forest Farm Nature Reserve. The site is a haven for wildlife, contributes to the overall biodiversity of the surrounding area and is critical for the physical and mental health of thousands of local people.

This short video film has been created to tell the story of why two things need to happen: ONE - the people of South Wales need to have a 21st century cancer centre, and TWO - the people of Cardiff must retain the northern meadows and nature reserve land as a community wellbeing resource:-

Protecting Our Health

In 2015 it was decided by the Welsh Government and the Welsh NHS to develop the 23 acres by constructing two huge access bridges across the railway cutting which is part of the nature reserve, at an estimated cost then of just under £30m. Though the development proposed with enabling works already being undertaken is for a new cancer centre, the opinion in the wider medical community across Wales and England is that standalone cancer centres are an outdated and dangerous model of cancer care. In fact in England all new cancer hospitals are built on or next to a general hospital to provide a better, fast and more comprehensive facility to those receiving cancer treatment.

As the planet faces the most extreme wildlife decline, habitat loss, flooding and pollution emergencies, saving areas such as the Northern Meadows becomes increasingly vital for us and for future generations. Our community has uncovered many reasons why development of the Northern Meadows should not go ahead and we will continue to fight.

Our Government here in Wales and indeed Cardiff Council have declared climate and nature emergencies. They have pledged to do all they can to avoid any further destruction taking place but their actions prove they are empty promises.

Why are they developing the Northern Meadows when there are many alternative options open to them?

Please help us carry on fighting the injustice happening here by donating what you can. All funds will be used for campaigning purposes; legal advice and launching potential legal challenges, creating leaflets and banners, and advertising.

Thank You
