SAVE OUR MONUMENT
On Great Torrington Commons
Following the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815, the widows of Great Torrington and surrounding parishes raised funds to erect a monument on the Castle Hill side of Great Torrington Commons in memory of their loved ones who died during the battle.
This Grade 11 listed monument has been standing proudly, an iconic structure on the commons since 1886. Unfortunately, the monument is now starting to crumble and needs £20,000 to bring it back to its former glory.
Local legend and Torrington historian, BIG Al Mitchell is leading a fundraising campaign to raise the funds needed to restore the monument for future generations to enjoy. Big Al and Anne Tattersall will be hosting a range of fundraising events over the future months and we will update you with dates and events over the coming months.
From Saturday 25th February Big Al will be playing EVERY Saturday from 11am to 1pm outside Highly Strung in Torrington’s Pannier and all donations will be grateful received.
If you’d like to help BIG Al reach his target of £20,000, there are several ways to do this. You can log on to this JustGiving page and leave a donation. If you are a pub, perhaps you could organise your own fundraising event for the Campaign, which Anne Tattersall will promote and advertise. If you are a business, perhaps you could ask your staff to donate a £1 from their salary. There are lots of ways to get involved and if you have any creative ideas, you can ring Anne on 0797 1696192.
Every penny raised will go in its entirety to the Save Our Monument campaign.
Thank you one and all
BIG All & Anne
