    Story

Since Sheffield Cathedral shocked the country by unexpectedly closing its choir in July 2020, our campaign has received overwhelming support. You can sign our petition here .

While unable to sing at the Cathedral, we are delighted that the members of the former choir have decided to continue singing together in service of the city.

The Steel City Choristers will take Anglican choral music beyond the doors of the cathedral out into the city of Sheffield to reach wider and more diverse communities. The new choir will continue to have inclusivity at its core and seek out new and exciting locations to sing. It will share its music with a range of congregations to enrich the worship of churches in every corner of the city.

Directed by Joshua Stephens, previously Master of the Music at Sheffield Cathedral, the new choir is made up of the majority of the Cathedral's former choristers, choral scholars and professional adult singers, and will begin recruiting new singers immediately. Girls and boys from different socio-economic backgrounds, particularly those with limited contact with music, will be encouraged to audition to join, along with boys with changing voices.

The choir has started rehearsing in Owlerton, near Hillsborough. Plans are being made, subject to COVID, to sing Sunday services in a number of churches this term, as well as Faure’s Requiem for Remembrance Sunday, and a Christmas programme including an Advent Carol Service, Britten’s Ceremony of Carols and a carol concert.

Your support will fund Steel City Choristers in its first six months to pay its Director of Music to lead the choir and develop partnerships with schools, churches and communities across the city. It will also fund singing tuition, the costs of hiring music, accompanists and venues, as well as other expenses including ensuring the highest standards of safety during the coronavirus pandemic.
