I've raised £4000 to to help Santorini Animal Welfare Association look after over 100 dogs, numerous equines, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens & ducks!

Non-government funded so relying totally on donations and volunteers, Santorini Animal Welfare Association currently houses over 100 dogs, 20+ donkey/mules, an ex race-horse, two (very large) pigs, and two goats - and is run pretty much single-handedly by one amazing woman - Christina, who has given her life to fight for the abandoned and abused animals of the island.
Education also plays a big part, trying to make locals and seasonal workers understand the importance of sterilisation, and also educating children from a young age about the importance of empathy and love for animals.
Situated in an old pumice mine up in the barren hills, the shelter faces an on-going struggle against the elements, the exploding dog and cat population on the island due to lack of sterilisation, and the mistreatment of the working donkeys and mules used to transport tourists, and rubbish (in the dead of night) up the steep inclines of the island.
Sadly, although the State are required to provide some food, water, and maintain the access road, they constantly renege on their responsibility, meaning the shelter relies entirely on donations.
Apart from the basics of food, water, and veterinary costs, funding is also needed to sort out the access road, which gets completely washed away during winter rains.. electricity, toilets and much much more!
100% of all donations to this fundraiser go to SAWA, I cover the JustGiving costs myself - please give as generously as you can to help Christina care for the sadly ever-growing population at the shelter, and if you can help with promoting adoption of the dogs, or are even looking to adopt yourself, please get in touch - via the Website , or Facebook - Santorini Animal Welfare Association
Thank you, Em xxxx
