I've raised £1000 to raise funds to continue building Newill Academy, Ghana to provide education and support for local children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Newill Academy opened in 2010 when William Newman, Sharp Business System Customer Support Engineer, previously a Ghanaian teacher, set up a pre-school on land he owned in Koforidua in Ghana. His aim was to provide education and support for local children from disadvantaged backgrounds, mainly children of market sellers and street vendors.
The school started with 50 children and quickly became popular and now over 200 pupils attend. Alongside the growth of the Academy in 2013 William took a career break to help continue the building work and improving facilities.
The school works on a non-profit basis, students pay a minimal amount to cover teacher’s salaries, the school bus and a daily meal. With a lack of structured financial support the Academy faces ongoing challenges.
Sharp Business Services chose Newill Academy as one of our key charities as it aligns with our goal of supporting causes which ‘Enrich Young Lives’. The Academy will be part of our CSR events calendar and we’ll support William and the school on an ongoing basis through fundraising, awareness and donations.
William is delighted we are raising funds for Newill Academy on our fundraising day, he told us:
The money raised will go towards providing flooring for the class rooms on the first floor of the school. The dust created from not having floors in place affects the children’s breathing and prevents them from keeping their uniforms clean. The lack of flooring means that on the ground floor a canopy needs to be used on hot sunny days and when it rains to protect the children from the weather. The floor will make a huge difference to the children’s comfort.
