Story

RAF SCAMPTON - REMEMBRANCE, HISTORY & HERITAGE.

The project aims to teach primary school children the meaning of remembrance, by telling in the first person, the personal stories of those buried here.

"This exciting new educational project, aimed at school children, is an innovative and  wonderful idea to help keep the personal stories alive of those from RAF Scampton who died serving their country. It will also maintain the heritage and history of that iconic station following its recent closure."..........Flt Lt John Nichol (former Tornado GR1 navigator, prisoner-of-war, and author)

Please watch the appeal's video made by Wing Commander Adam Collins, officer commanding The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team (The Red Arrows):

􏰋In partnership with Heritage Lincolnshire and The Commonwealth War Graves Commission , we have developed lesson plans and materials which link to the national curriculum. The lesson plans remember the air crew from RAF Scampton who died serving their country, as well as the stations history and heritage. We have installed interactive digital screens to assist visiting children to learn of those personal stories. The research has been carried out over many years by Flt Lt Gary Mennell from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Part of the project entails building a new website. Our current website was developed in 2015 and is now limited, inefficient, and unsuitable for the new Heritage Lincolnshire and CWGC educational purposes. The new website will ensure that a wider age range of children are attracted to the project by a modern design with easier navigation, ensuring that the RAF heritage here is better explained. The work will be carried out by Monkie Graphic Design Agency. Here is a typical example of how each personal story will be presented:

Several local primary schools have already experienced day visits to learn about the second world war, remembrance, and those buried here. Here's what some of the school staff have said:

'Thanks for organising the visit. The class and adults really enjoyed themselves and remembered a lot. Using the digital screens was the children’s favourite part of the day. They got really involved in building the picture of their allocated ‘Fallen Friend’, collecting information and writing the letter.' (Pollyplatt Community Primary School)

'Feedback from pupils and staff of the day at church was very positive. The children really enjoyed the practical tasks, looking at the natural environment; for items within the church and of course, researching their World War 2 'fallen friend'. The pupils engaged well with the sessions and enjoyed learning about the countries in the commonwealth.' (Scampton CofE Primary School)

During a pilot of the scheme transport costs have been an issue. The new website will enable schools to access the personal stories by distance learning, and interact virtually with a battlefield tour guide who will be 'on site'.
