Who we are and what we do?

We are a small registered NGO, named Camborea , located 20 kilometers away from Siem Reap, the entrance city to the well know Angkor Wat temples. We are focused on helping our own community in appropriate way, mainly by providing drinkable water to necessitous families by drilling wells, improving the health of the villagers by doing prevention on hygiene and care on light pathologies, feeding people and fighting against malnutrition through an organic and educational garden, rebuilding unsafe houses, and much more...

Education is also important for us, but with all the needs of our rural and modest community, we decided to stay on the essential. Until few weeks ago, when the local authorities came to us to ask some help.

Why building a school?

In our village of Phlung there is no school. The small kids from the 500 families are learning in other villages around, or are not going to learn at all, as the way to go is dangerous crossing crowded road with trucks and buses, and because some families have no way to bring them either.

The need of a primary school is real, for all the children from 5 to 11 years, but the budget of the community is very tight. Government will provide the teachers, the commune chief will take care of the building part, but the villagers must provide a place to do the school and so for that to buy a piece of land. I don’t have to say that the incomes of a rural community of farmers, cannot support the purchase of and expensive good like this, even for a great cause. So they all put their small money in a pot, and came to us to ask if we could provide the $5000 they need to make this school project happens (so we started a campaign of $6000 to be sure to have this amount at the end, after deduction of different fees and money transfer to Cambodia).

They already found the appropriate place, which is just next to our NGO’s educational garden , where we grow vegetables in an organic way to train people to permaculture, and help them after to start their own garden at home, to become self-sufficient and strive the malnutrition which is very common in rural Cambodia.

Not only a school...

This school will not be a normal school for Camborea, even if it will follow the Cambodian curriculum from the government, it will be a big chance to change the future of the entire community. First, this location is definitely prefect for us, as we will be able to link the garden with kids’ education, and then show them that the biodiversity is so important as well as the respect of the nature. Second, we will not stop to a primary school as the local authorities are already talking about a secondary one also. And third, our NGO will open a kindergarten there, essential for the women from the village who cannot find any work as they have to take care of their young children.

And this will only be the first step, as we also want to move there the “health center ” we started, to be closer to the young generation to train them more efficiently and do more prevention, to create a workshop to preserve local handicrafts which will disappear soon, and a cultural center as well as to save the local culture and believes, that our community is very rich.

As you can, it’s a really big project that our NGO is running, that’s we are asking funds today to start it. We all know that $6000 is a huge amount of money, but with your help we can definitely make it possible.
