Having returned from a volunteering mission at St. Ignatius Prep and Primary School in Dodoma this summer, I am continuing to raise money to sponsor four underprivileged children through their education at the school. Whilst many of the students at St. Ignatius are funded by their parents, there are also a large number of pupils who don't have this privilege; some are AIDs orphans, some are HIV positive and live with parents that are too sick to work, and some are from poorer or single-parent families that are simply struggling to make ends meet.

It costs £550 per year to send a child to St. Ignatius (that's 1.5 million Tanzanian Shillings.) During my time in Tanzania with the children I witnessed how much they love being at school and that they have a deep desire to learn. Securing financial sponsorship for poorer children is difficult, particularly as intake numbers are increasing each year. Some of the (free) government schools in Dodoma lack enough desks and chairs for the number of students; this means children sit on the floor and classrooms are overcrowded. It is for this reason that we have committed ourselves as the Manchester Universities Catholic Chaplaincy (where I work!) to sponsoring four of the children in greatest need.

I love to draw, and so I've turned one of my latest creations into a prayer card to help raise the funds needed to put one of the four candidates through their first year of schooling. I'm selling them at £1 each - if you would like to purchase one I will gladly post them it to you.
