Story

Seaglass Collective has been established to deliver stimulating creative projects for adopted children and young people, helping them to benefit from the arts in an understanding and supportive environment.

The pilot project will include songwriting, drama and poetry workshops for 32 children aged 6-18. Those taking part will work alongside professional artists to create their own pieces of art and the songwriting and poetry workshops will culminate in performances by the artists, incorporating the work produced by the young people.

This is an important project that is in demand from adoptive parents and their children. It will build self-esteem, self-expression, communication skills and break down barriers to arts participation.

We have secured funding from Arts Council England and One Adoption, but need a further £300 to ensure the project can go ahead.

AT-iD are supporting the Seaglass pilot because creative ways of communicating are what our adoptees have asked for. The adopted teenagers who are part of our project have told us that expressing themselves isn’t a straightforward task and that traditional methods of talking and writing can be overwhelming and complicated because their brains simply cannot process in traditional ways due to complex trauma. Creative arts are used in therapeutic interventions with adoptees, but this pilot allows for creative outlets to be more accessible at a much broader level and helps meet fundamental needs of adoptees such as; emotional expression, building self -esteem and developing identity.

This project is exactly the kind of partnership we are looking to build. We know of no other provision for this particular group and we know of the difference it will make to the participants and their families.
