Story

We are raising £10,000 to fund a memorial to Lionel Main ; the Lionel Main Memorial Trust. This fund will be used to assist young fishers to fish the river Spey and to develop potential as future ghillies, in cooperation with Countryside Learning Scotland, the Scottish Angling Development Strategy and the Gamekeepers Welfare Trust.

The Reidhaven Estate will donate one week’s exclusive access to one of the Castle Grant Beats annually together with use of the fishing hut and the services of a ghillie for the above purpose.

The Lionel Main Memorial Trust will be registered as a charity with OSCR and managed in accordance with OSCR regulations.

If insufficient funds are raised to make the project viable, the fund will be donated to The Gamekeepers Welfare Trust.

In addition, a pool on Castle Grant No 2 beat will be renamed in Lionel’s honour and an oak tree will be planted in his memory.

The inaugural Lionel Main course in Angling and the Aquatic Environment was held 10-16 July 2023 on Castle Grant No 1 beat on the Spey. Five lucky lads achieved the SCQF NP4 qualification and James Stewart (14) was awarded the Lionel Main trophy for the most outstanding student. Four of the boys caught a fish; 3 salmon and one seatrout. The Strathspey and Seafield estate have generously offered a beat annually and so we will now seek permanent funding from industry. I enclose a picture and a link to the STV coverage in my next post.

£4790 has been transferred to Countryside Learning Scotland, who will be organising the first course. This is booked on Castle Grant No 1 beat 10-15 July 2023. We have several applicants from local schools and am confident that we will fill the course. Course materials and an on line learning package have been prepared.
