In summer 2017, I will be adventuring to South East Asia with other students from OAV to help less fortunate communities and experience what life is like in poorer corners of the world. To make this 21 day experience to Cambodia and Laos a reality it will not only take courage and teamwork but also much fundraising and effort.
after landing in Laos and having a day or twoto acclimatise we will begin our experience by helping with local environmental development projects as well as spending time with school children playing and teaching them English. We are hoping to take small gifts with us to help break down barriers. We will then move on to completing a 4 day trek through the jungle spending our nights in the villages we come across on our travels. We are either staying in village halls or in the houses of local people where we will experience the day to day culture of this country first hand.
As we move on to Cambodia we are planning on visiting the Floating Village, the Great Palace and Angkor Wat these places are very different to one another but all have a part in the culture and history of
Cambodia.
Although we have experienced trip guides with us the group is going to be encouraged to arrange our transport to each part of our trip, we are going to have to shop for food in an unfamiliar country and then cook the strange foods during the times we are not with local people. We are going to have to learn how to respond to and thank the local people who welcome us into their villages/ homes.
I think the experience will set the group up with many transferable skills that we will take forward in our lives, I know we will all have days when things seem tough but I truly believe that with team work and personal insight this experience will be amazing and eye opening and I am sure we will learn so much about a far away country as well as about ourselves.
