Story
Seed is a Search & social marketing agency based in Brighton. At Seed, we are committed to helping our local community. This year we have decided to participate in a summer beach clean to stop harmful plastics and litter from ending up in our oceans.
Over 300 million tons of plastics are produced every year and at least 8 million tons of that will end up in our oceans. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic a lot of us have rekindled our love for nature and we want to spread awareness and help protect our planet for future generations to come.
Our beach clean will take place on Thursday the 19th of august and we will be picking up litter from Brighton Pier and West Pier. This year we will be raising money for The Green Centre.
The Green Centre was established in 2006 as a community environmental organisation to provide information, advice and education on all things related to the care of our planet. The Green Centre are guided by the needs of the environment combined with the needs of the community.
The centre was set up by former Special Needs Headteacher Melanie Rees and local businessman Tony Nisbett. The centre is run entirely by volunteers. The Green Centre's program is inclusive and diverse welcoming people who have chronic health conditions, learning difficulties, mental health issues, and long term unemployed. The core team is supported by short term volunteer placements from within the local community and beyond including schools, colleges, universities, and businesses. This fusion of diversity makes for a dynamic and resilient team.
The Green Centre work collaboratively with Brighton & Hove City Council and the leading environmental organizations in the city and further afield enabling us to share expertise and experience in their respective fields.
The Green Centre's program of activities is based upon a holistic approach to sustainable living called One Planet Living and includes the following principles; Equality & Fairtrade, Health & Happiness, Culture & Community, Nature & Wildlife, Sustainable Water, Sustainable Food, Sustainable Transport, Sustainable Materials, Sustainable Energy and Zero Waste. These themes are embedded in all their work; how they run their organisation, the vision they share with the community of Brighton and Hove and the activities they deliver.
Covid-19 impacted The Green Centre's organisation significantly and they lost 50% of their income but like good environmentalists they adapt and mitigate. The Green Centre have been fortunate to receive support from the Council to secure a permanent unit at Brighton Open Market. The space is called, “Planet Brighton” and will give small organisations an opportunity to showcase their work while we all strive to recover from the impact of the last 18 months.
