One in five people in the UK identifies as having a visible difference.

Yet too many are still stared at, underestimated, excluded or reduced to a single feature of their appearance.

Research found that 43% of people with a visible difference have experienced hostile behaviour because of how they look. More than one in three have faced discrimination when applying for work. Almost half of young people with a visible difference have been bullied about their appearance at school.

The problem is not the face, the scar, the mark or the difference.

The problem is what people have been taught to see.

Seen. Not Defined. exists to change that.

We are building a charity that challenges appearance-based prejudice, changes the stories society tells about visible difference and helps people reclaim the right to be seen as whole human beings.

Our work will bring together lived experience, education, advocacy and public campaigns. We want to work with schools, employers, healthcare professionals, brands and communities to create lasting change, while building spaces where people affected by visible difference feel recognised, connected and powerful.
