Story

Who am I?

Hello (Bula)! I am Toby, currently in my final year at University College London reading Philosophy, Politics and Economics. I am from Hong Kong and am 20 years old.

What am I fundraising for?

I am fundraising to support the programme fees for the Think Pacific 2-month project (£3,295) and other relevant expenses such as transport to Fiji.

What is the Think Pacific 2-month project?

Think Pacific is an NGO that works in direct partnership with government ministries, industry leaders and NGOs across the Asia-Pacific region, crafting projects that are locally led and have a sustainable impact. The organisation started on Fiji islands over 15 years ago, and continues to be dedicated to facilitating projects that give students the incredible opportunity to enhance their employability and global perspectives, whilst being immersed in cultures as warm and exciting as the countries themselves.

During my stay in Fiji between June and August 2024, I will be working on a community build project in the first month and holding workshops on various issues such as mental health, youth empowerment and sports development for local youth in Fiji in the second month. For the whole time, I will be living in a remote village to experience the real Fijian lifestyle.

How will I fundraise?

I will challenge myself to walk to all 272 tube stations in London. This 402km walk will be documented on my instagram account @thetubewalker.

Why am I doing the Think Pacific 2-month project?

I believe the project would have a lifelong and life-changing impact on me. For the past three years in university, I have always wanted to embark on a long volunteering experience to a place that I have never visited, partly because I love travelling, but also because I want to make a meaningful impact on someone else’s life. As I graduate and am about to enter the workplace after this summer, I realised that this would very likely be my last opportunity to go on a long-term volunteering trip, and have therefore applied because I do not want to leave any regrets.

I have chosen to do the 2-month project because I would only be able to fully experience the Fijian life and boost my cultural IQ if I stayed for long enough to have more interactions with the locals. As an avid traveller, I wish to take this opportunity to visit Fiji, a country with a completely different culture and lifestyle from the places I have lived in so far.

Why I need your help

The project fees are not easily affordable by a student like myself. As a charity, Think Pacific encourages us to raise money to cover our project fees. The money raised for project fees goes towards running the volunteering projects, sustainable development in Fiji, youth engagement, employability, leadership and healthy Fiji islands.

Please support me to enable me to go on this meaningful cause - every penny counts!
