Here's a statistic for you: 74% of top judges working in the high court and appeals court are privately educated, as are nearly 70% of Barristers. It would seem that the old story holds true; in the world of law, money talks.
My name is Simeon. I have been State educated from the bottom up, am required, quite rightly, to financially contribute to the home, and have always relied on scholarships to get me through my higher education. Whilst I would love to go to Law school, I simply cannot afford it. This is not to say that I am not trying- I already work two jobs- but I feel that if I did not do everything in my power to try and raise some cash, namely making this page, then I would be missing an opportunity.
In my mind, something NEEDS to desperately change in the profession of law. As much as established practitioners and political orators may say, law is STILL an elitist industry. Of course it is with course fees reaching £30,000. I believe that in a profession which is meant to support the general public, the general public should have some sort of input in the lawyers, law and decision makers who are SUPPOSED to best relate to the public's own, personal stories and social circumstances. Surely our legal representatives need to be just that- REPRESENTATIVE?
That is why I come to you. This is YOUR decision. In this instance, the resolution of who becomes a Barrister comes down to YOU- not how much money Mum and Dad have, very kindly, set aside or how many contacts Grandpa knows in the Inns of Court.
I would ask you, humbly, to allow me the exceptional opportunity to study a subject that will hopefully, one day, change not only my life, but the lives of those whom I am privileged enough to work for and defend in court. Whatever you can do would be a massive help- whether this is donating money or just spreading the word.
I really, truly thank you for even reading my waffle and clicking on the page!
