Iʼve raised £2,527 to sequence samoyed genes for diabetes research
- Funded on Sunday, 2nd July 2017

Story
Treating a sammy with diabetes involves a life long care regime. It is never totally stable and can change from day to day and even from moment to moment. If we could locate the diabetes markers in sammies - we could identify those dogs which are at high risk of developing the disease and, over time, breed away from affected dogs and possibly put an end to a terrifying disease.
What is the research?
Simply put, the research involves sequencing genetic material (DNA) that has been collected from diabetic samoyeds, in order to find the genetic markers that indicates diabetes. This is party done by comparing the DNA against DNA collected from a breed that does not have the genetic predisposition - in this case Boxers.
How much are we trying to raise?
We need to raise money to do the sequencing - a total of £20,000 for four years research. For every £1,000 raised we can sequence an additional samoyed. The Research Council have already agreed to support a 4 year PhD studentship to commence in October 2017.
Who will be doing the work?
We are very lucky to have noted veterinary clinical research scientist, Professor Brian Catchpole, who, in collaboration with The Welcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at the University of Oxford, has been working with the breed for many years in this area. We were fortunate to have Professor Catchpole on The Samoyed Association at Crufts answering questions on his research.
What can I do?
- give us your money!
- persuade your friends and family to give us THEIR money
- hold fundraising events - at your local dog clubs, ringcraft, raffles etc
- do a sponsored dog walk, cake bake or .... with the summer in mind ... lose weight for samoyed health!!!
How can I donate?
Through this page
By cheque to The Samoyed Association, noting that the money is for Sequence a Sammy
To any Samoyed Association committee member.

8 years agoAn update after the Association show last weekend. We raised a wonderful £139 from the raffle. Richard Jackson's sales of his delicious chocolates raised a further £110. Also The British Samoyed Club donated a stonking £1,000. All in all we banked £1,1499.52 this week in aid of the Sequence a Sammy. A fantastic thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. This brings our total raised so far to £3,656. Still a long way to go but a great effort so far. There will be so more items going on eBay this week so please watch out for them

8 years agoA huge thank you to everyone who supported our on line auction of a few things for the Sequence a Sammy campaign. We've raised £93 from that. In the meantime, if anyone has anything they would like to donate for us to sell in support of the campaign we would be hugely grateful. And thanks to all who have donated so far.

8 years agoThank you all of you who have donated so far we are now up to £2,278 but still with a huge gap to fill. We have had some very generous donations but as you can see we still need more. If any of you have bright ideas for fund raising then please let me know. We have a limited time span to raise this money but anything will help.
