Story
I‘m raising money to fund two weeks of volunteering at Refugee Community Kitchen (RCK) in Calais, cooking and distributing meals to refugees seeking passage to the UK.
As part of this effort I’ll be attempting my first half marathon next weekend - on Sunday the 12th of May - the Snowdonia Half Marathon, in the Llanwrst and Betws-y-Coed area.
What is raised here will fund two weeks of volunteering in Calais in the first half of June, specifically coach travel and campsite accommodation; and whatever is left over will be given directly to RCK as donations.
RCK is a charity I have felt strongly drawn to volunteer with for a number of years. Since its foundation in 2015, it has served over 2 million hot meals in Calais - and its more recently established outreach points in London and Edinburgh.
During my recent undergrad degree, I studied modules on border politics, migration, racial segregation, and coastal systems, which alongside experiences of bin diving and food waste has heightened an awareness of food security and migration. In the context of Calais and the border, these fields intersect, and volunteering at RCK in the heavily policed border zone of northern France will be an experience of making real and material many of the issues I have only read and written about.
These two weeks will be a learning experience for me and a small but valuable contribution to a valuable charity, in its ongoing efforts to provide food and solidarity with people who are risking their lives to cross the Channel and seek asylum in the UK.
Please consider supporting me with a donation.
Thank you,
Sev
